International Charter for Media Integrity & Countering Disinformation

A Global Commitment to Media Integrity

The International Charter for Media Integrity & Countering Disinformation is an international initiative launched by the International Center for Countering Media Disinformation (ICCMD).

The Charter establishes a voluntary professional framework that brings together media institutions, professional and academic organizations, journalists, researchers, and experts around shared principles and standards. It aims to strengthen media integrity, promote a culture of verification, and encourage international cooperation in countering media disinformation.

Why the Charter?

The Charter is ICCMD’s first major and sustainable international initiative.

It seeks to build a global network of institutions, organizations, and individuals committed to shared professional principles and standards for promoting media integrity and countering disinformation.

Our Vision

To build an international network committed to shared professional principles that strengthen public trust in information and support media practices that are more accurate, transparent, responsible, and trustworthy.

Our Mission

The Charter is intended to be more than a document for signature. It serves as an international platform for professional cooperation, bringing together individuals and organizations committed to its standards and creating opportunities for partnerships, programs, and joint initiatives.

Core Principles of the Charter

Accuracy and Verification

Verify information, sources, and context before publishing, sharing, or redistributing media content.

Integrity and Independence

Maintain professional integrity and the independence of media work, and refrain from intentionally publishing or promoting false or misleading content.

Transparency and Accountability

Promote transparency when handling information and sources, accept professional responsibility, and correct significant errors when they are identified.

Media and Digital Responsibility

Use media content, digital platforms, emerging technologies, and artificial intelligence responsibly in ways that strengthen the reliability of information and reduce disinformation.

Professional Neutrality and Respect for Sovereignty and National Contexts

Maintain professional neutrality while respecting the sovereignty, laws, national identity, and cultural characteristics of countries, as well as differences in media and social contexts.
